Are you sure that you are removing hair the right way?
There are ways to ensure a smooth and comfortable shave or wax. Many women who shave or wax may commit mistakes which get in the way of effective hair removal. Make sure that you do not commit these mistakes.
Mistake # 1 – Not Exfoliating
Your skin constantly sheds dead skin cells. It does so slowly unless you facilitate the process by exfoliating your skin. If you do not exfoliate, the skin becomes flaky and rough. It can lock in oils on its surface. It can also trap hairs beneath it, causing ingrown hairs. If you regularly exfoliate dead skin by using a gentle scrub, you are likely to have lustrous and silky skin.
Make it a habit to use body lotion which has alpha hydroxyl acids as one of its active ingredients. The lotion helps to get dead skin loose, preventing it from trapping hair beneath it. Whether you remove hair by shaving or waxing, it is a good idea to exfoliate with lotion or body wash with buffing beads as protection against ingrown hairs.
Mistake #2 – Using Dull Razor Blades
Many people do not think about changing the razor blade that they use for hair removal. They use the same razor blade over and over again. If you want a clean close shave, make sure that you always use a sharp blade. You will also prevent red and uncomfortable day-after bumps. Experts recommend that you replace your razor blade after each use – or after four uses, at the maximum.
You should also make it a point to rinse your razor blade after each stroke. Frequent rinsing between strokes assures you of a close and even shave.
Mistake # 3 –Shaving Dry Skin
You should not shave dry skin as this can cause many problems. It causes the formation of ingrown hairs. It results in razor burns and irritates the skin. Use warm water to wet your skin before you shave it. This softens the skin and allows a clean, close, and precise shave.
Mistake #4 –Not Using Shave Cream
When you apply shaving cream against the direction of hair growth, you get the hair strands to stand straight up. This allows you to get an efficient and exact shave. Experts say that you get an additional 1/2 millimeter of hair simply by applying shave cream prior to shaving.
Shaving cream also prevents skin problems like inflammation, redness, and irritations. It makes the skin smooth and supple. If you run out of shaving cream, you can use hair conditioner or olive oil instead.
Mistake #5 –Shaving at the “Wrong” Time
Many women make it a habit of shaving in the morning after they take their morning shower. It is a convenient habit which saves time. However, shaving in the morning does not give you the best finish possible. Legs tend to swell up a bit during the night and some hair strands get embedded. If you shave in the morning, you are not likely to get a close shave. If you want a closer, cleaner shave, it is better to shave at night.
Women also seem to like shaving their legs while they take a warm soak in the tub. Warm water makes legs swell momentarily. The swelling embeds the hair, preventing a clean, precise shave. If you are bent on shaving your legs while you are in the tub, make sure that you do so right after you get in. If you wait for more than ten minutes after your soak, you will not get a smooth finish.
Mistake #6 –Shaving against Hair Growth
It is prudent to shave in the direction of hair growth. This way, you avoid ingrown hair and razor burns. You are also not likely to have unsightly red bumps.
Mistake # 7 – Waxing Too Frequently and Improperly
Many women tend to rush to have their legs waxed when they see stubbles. Experts say that it is better to wait about four weeks or so before you have your legs waxed again. The duration allows hair to grow long enough for the wax to grab. If you have fine hair, wait for the hair on your legs and on the bikini area to grow about a quarter inch long before waxing. If you have coarse hair, wait for it to grow about half an inch before waxing.
If you are using the waxing technique on yourself, make sure that you do it properly. The procedure is standard – spreading the wax, covering with fabric, and ripping the strip. You have to remember one thing, though. As you rip the strip, drag the skin tight in the other direction. This will help prevent the formation of serious skin bruises.
Avoid committing these 7 biggest hair removal mistakes. Doing so will help you remove hair effectively to reveal soft, smooth, and beautiful skin.
